Proximity Banking and access to financial services

The World Savings Bank Institute, based in Brussels, is a worthy body which recently convened a symposium on the issue of financial access. A broad range of speakers addressed conceptual issues of access and its outworking into a variety of settings. The conference papers are available on the conference site, linked above.

 

I found the following of special interest:

·        The overview paper by Stephen Peachey and Alan Roe of Oxford Policy Management ;

·        The conceptual overview of issues of access by Thorsten Beck of the World Bank—a solid statement of the theory and issues as it stood; and

·        The paper by Caskey et al comparing unbanked in US and Mexico, which shows interesting similarities and differences.
